Hueco Trip, Part III

This was our first trip back to Hueco after Maria’s foot surgery. Even after about 10 weeks of very little climbing and easy stuff at that, Maria and I had a pretty successful trip.  Maria ran up three problems, including a V3 and V4, while I was able to get up the same V4 after a day of rest.  All in all, a fun trip!

Solid Oak Table

This was my very first solo project for profit. My neighbor had seen me working on the Alder table and Mahogany wall unit and asked if I would make him a few pieces of furniture for his home office.  This oak table proved to be unique in that it’s made entirely from solid oak…not a single piece of plywood anywhere.  It was also the first time I was able to try out my new spray equipment and use a stain/lacquer combination finish.

Front view of finished table in the sunlight...really brings out the golden oak stain
Isometric view of table
Side view of table - both shelves and top were made up of edge-joined pieces of oak
Corner view - the legs were also made from laminated pieces of solid oak
View of leg and table-top mounting hardware
The shelves were mounted by sliding the corners into grooves in the legs and anchoring them with a single pocket-hole screw...it worked way better than I ever intended!

The Great Houdini!

After about a year, we decided that Hexus needed a little brother to play with.  So, we got another pound-kitten and named him Houdini.  He’s just as much a handful as Hexus ever was, but with a bigger tendency to cuddle with us.  It’s taking some time for the two to become acquainted, and so far Houdini has demonstrated his unwillingness to take any crap from Hexus.  It’s been quite interesting playing referee!

Needless to say, Hexus wouldn't let his new little brother out of his sight

Houdini seems to love Maria's hair for some reason...either that, or her hair has sprouted ears of its own!

Cherry Wall Clock

This clock was inspired by an ad Maria saw in a magazine.  I was able to find some cool clock parts online and build my own version that sports concealed hinges, a magnetic catch, a quartz electric movement, and a 3″ dia. brass pendulum.

Hexus, the Demon Spawn!

After months of breaking me down, Mia succeeded in letting her buy a kitten (interesting how wives can do that).  A few days later, we found Hexus at the animal shelter in September of 2005.  He was a pistol from the very get-go.  His nickname at the pound was ‘Lover boy’, which he can be…but Hexus suited him much better as he has been keeping us on our toes ever since he graced our household!

Either he really likes beer, or he's a closet contorsionist!
We thought one of Holly's tarantulas would make a nice brother for Hexus 😉
