Some of our get-aways

Our new adventure…

So…for those of you who know us well, you know we NEVER do anything easy.

10 years ago we decided that tent camping was no longer going to work for us…especially with children. We decided to take the plunge and buy a pop up trailer that we have been hauling with us on all of our climbing trips and it has truly made for some wonderful experiences. However…in the last couple years, we’re becoming more and more aware that we just don’t FIT in it anymore. We made bunk beds that were awesome, but the boys are getting older and BIGGER and our space is starting to disappear.

A year or so ago, we got in touch with a good friend of ours who works at an RV shop and asked him to show us some upgrades. The trailers were beautiful – with price tags to match. The one I fell in love with was a hybrid. It was a hard shell trailer with beds that popped out of the sides. It had a TON of room and a really nice floor plan but was a bit on the heavier side so we were looking at possibly upgrading vehicles as well. After discovering that the price was $24,000, I knew this wasn’t an option and refusing to buy ANOTHER car, we abandoned the idea of getting a new trailer.

I kept searching on RV sites for something that would work but nothing came up. Until one day, I found what I had been looking for. =)

Among the posts for RV’s, fifth wheels, pop-ups  and truck campers, I found… A converted SCHOOL BUS. Yes that’s right. A school bus. If you’re like most people, you’re thinking… HIPPIES. Make love, not war. The Partridge Family. Well, you’d be wrong. Believe it or not, the school bus is becoming more and more popular as a converted vehicle and even a tiny house because it’s WAY cheaper than buying a huge RV and you can design it however you want. The one I saw for sale was beautiful and I instantly fell in love. Now mind you, this was almost a year ago when I stumbled on this. I grabbed Tommy, showed him what I had found and he immediately shot me down. Hahaha! Not too surprising.  Well, if you know me at all, you know that I don’t give up easily. So over the past year, I kept dropping little hints and suggestions on his head, trying to soften him up. He was pretty resistant until 3 months ago when I was searching for something on Craigslist and found a listing for a school bus. It must have been divine intervention because I was just sitting at my desk not saying a word when he walked in to see what I looking at. I started looking through the photos and something happened. Tommy said “Is that a cobra on the hood??” (It had a COBRA as a hood ornament which made me love it all the more! HAHAHA!) I said, “Here look at the pictures…” And as soon as he sat down, I knew he was ready.

We didn’t end up buying that bus, even though it was awesome and the cobra alone made it worth the money the guy wanted. After seeing that post though, Tommy got the bug and things started moving fast. He was like a bloodhound on the trail of busses and I was happy to hand the reigns over to him. He scoured tons of sites looking for one that would work. There’s a site called Public Surplus that lists busses for sale all over the country. It’s an auction site and the cool thing is that the bidding starts at like $500. We found one we liked but it was in bad shape and decided to pass. Then in June while he was up visiting his dad in MT, he found another one that we really wanted but we got outbid. Then one day I woke up and saw an email from him about a bus for sale on Craigslist up in Utah. I looked at the pictures and said “This is the one.” He ended up emailing and calling the guy and after some back and forth,  he agreed to hold it for us until we got up there. We were thrilled.  It was in excellent shape,  had low miles and was the length we wanted. It had already been somewhat converted. The guy had ripped out all the seats and put in really nice custom made couches.  He had also done some work on the transmission and ass end of it so that it would drive smoothly at high speeds. Because I was swamped at work and couldn’t get the time off, we had to wait FOREVER to drive up there and finally get it. So about a month later , at the end of July,  we packed our bags and made the 11 hour drive to Utah to pick up our new bus.

So as you know, it’s HOT in the summer. And this bus didn’t have AC. We anticipated the pain and bought some water bottles with fans so Tommy and the kids could keep cool. I was the lucky one. I got to drive the car back and use my air conditioner. Hahaha. By the way, the boys didn’t know we were buying this. I think they had an idea because we had been mentioning it a lot, but we never told them definitively that we were buying a bus. So it was a lot of fun to surprise them.

The trip was LONG. It was all driving pretty much and it was stressful because there was a lot we had to do in a little amount of time. Tommy was a natural behind the wheel and had a blast driving it for the first time. Getting gas was a goat rodeo but we managed. The worst part was the heat. Driving back through Phoenix in the 108 degree weather was NOT fun and even though the boys had the option to ride with me, they chose the bus and nearly cooked to death. I remember driving behind them and seeing little heads and arms hanging off the couches with their water bottles spraying themselves. Pretty funny. After we made it back, it was a race to get it registered and insured because we only had a 4 day temporary tag. THAT was a complete cluster and I don’t have the time or space to tell you all the details. Needless to say, we got it done and now our bus is sitting happily in our side yard behind a NEW block wall waiting to be gutted and worked on. But that my friends, is another story. Stay tuned. =)

Second day driving up to Lehi. Views from the car at 5:30 in the morning. We had to meet the guy early because he had to go to work.
Taking a break from the driving to get in some exercise. Still early as hell and the kids were already wound up.
I wish I had this kind of energy

A little vacation…

This summer has been kind of brutal.  Summer’s the busy season for my job and it was Hell this year. May was insane and June was worse and right when I was about to keel over from exhaustion, orders started to dwindle and we were all caught up. I felt like a little vacay was in order, so we decided to do a “staycation” over in PHX. Well  of course, we went when it was record heat so it was nice that we chose a place with a water park. It was call the Arizona Grand Hotel and it was VERY beautiful. We stayed for a 3 day weekend and that was just enough time to recharge my batteries. We also picked up a used Dyson stick vacuum and Garage AC from Craigslist so that was nice too. Hahaha! Gotta get my Craigslist fix! =)

Chillaxin
We got a really nice little room
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Me and my boys
The place had 10 swimming pools and a 7 acre water park. Crazy
Nightime charm
We could only explore so long. It was still 101 degrees when night fell
I really wanted to dive into that fountain

Another once in a lifetime trip – Disneyworld, FL!!!

Well, Grandpa, you crazy man, you’ve done it again, and I don’t think you can ever one up this one! =)

For those of you who have been following this blog, you’ll know that 3 years ago exactly, we took a trip to Disneyland that was orchestrated and completely funded by Grandpa. He told us when Henry was born that he was going to take him to Disneyland when he was 6 years old but ended up taking all of us for an unforgettable trip! It was AMAZING and we had an absolute ball. Well…after that, I guess he decided that he couldn’t do that for Henry and not Will, so about a year and a half ago he started toying with the idea for a trip to Disneyworld for Will’s 6th birthday. We told him he was insane, but he absolutely insisted and if you know Grandpa, once he puts his mind to something, it’s pretty impossible to derail him. So our plans were set to go to Disneyworld for the first week of the boys’ fall break and now that we’ve returned, I can say without hesitation that it was the funnest trip we’ve ever taken, hands down.

Needless to say, Grandpa had his share of heartburn – the beginning of September brought Hurricane Harvey and a 2 weeks before our trip,  Irma tore through Florida and ended up actually doing some damage to DW. Hurricane Maria also spawned a week before we left but she was too busy annihilating Puerto Rico so we thought we might be safe. After pouring over weather info for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Grandpa decided to take a gamble and said the weather should hold  for our week –  and boy did it ever! It was raining the night we got into Orlando but was clear, sunny and hot the entire time we were there. And believe it or not, it started raining the moment we walked out of our last park on our last day – talk about providential!

This trip was absolutely amazing and “Thank You” doesn’t even begin to express our gratitude to Grandpa for such an incredible adventure. A vacation to Disney World and Universal Studios was never something we saw ourselves taking simply because of the distance and cost. I think we also thought we’d end up murdering the kids – but they did really well and even though Will was too short to ride on some roller coasters, it didn’t even matter. It was a much needed vacation to a really cool place and it was all because of one man’s INSANE vision. Grandpa – we love that you are in our lives and that you are still plucky enough to take us on a kick ass vacation and ride crazy roller coasters with us even at 84! We adore, love and cherish you so much. You spoil the CRAP out of us and we are so grateful. Thank you thank you thank you for giving us something that we never would have taken for ourselves. You being there made it so much better. =) LOVE YOU!!!!!

The morning we left. Went and picked up Grandpa at 5:30am and Will couldn’t contain himself.
Come on Grandpa!!
At the airport, he decided to take a nap
So…we had 2 layovers on the way to Orlando but weren’t allowed to de-plane. So I told William to help the flight attendants clean up while we were waiting for passengers to board and they were just  blown away by his helpfulness. 10 minutes before we landed in the next city, they made an announcement over the PA calling him out and saying what a sweet boy he was and the whole plane clapped!! It was awesome. They made him a goodie bag full of snacks and a crown made out of pretzel bags. Hahaha!
The day we arrived was exhausting. We got into Orlando around 7 I believe and then drove about an hour to our condo. We arrived and were completely blown away by our digs! Grandpa hit the jackpot with this place.
It was a 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo with a full kitchen on the second floor. The best part was that Grandpa got it for $90 a night!!! Wow!!
Grandpa’s bedroom
Our bedroom, complete with a huge bathroom, walk in closet and a balcony.
Boys bedroom. They were THRILLED that they had their own TV…
First day! Striking a pose before heading out to Magic Kingdom
Me and Grandpa on the ferry across to the entrance
Walking down the main drag toward the castle. Pretty cool
Henry throwing gang signs or something
The Halloween parties for Disney started in September so a lot of people were dressed up. We saw this gal in a HeiHei outfit and I couldn’t resist.
Heading up to the Haunted Mansion
Getting on the speedway cars

Here’s a little preview of what we have in store for us in about 7 to 10 years!  UGH!!!

Riding Dumbo
Henry and Grandpas turn
They look like they’re having fun…
Tommy taking a pic of me taking a pic of him….that didn’t turn out of course
Henry and Grandpa on the Goofy ride
First day down! 5 more to go! =)
Epcot center!
Our first ride was on a space simulator. They boys loved it
Posing with the moon
To infinity! And beyond!
We had to take the boys over the Norway area while we were there. We picked up a Norwegian treat called Lefse – a potato tortilla stuffed with butter and cinnamon sugar. Not too bad. Way better than Lutafisk!
Tommy was so pissed. They replaced the traditional Norwegain ride that included a Viking ship and trolls with the whole Frozen crew. We boycotted it to show our disgruntledness.

There weren’t a lot of pictures from Epcot. First off, it was HOT and we had to walk a lot because the park was huge and things were so far apart. Henry ended up leaving his hat on one of the rides but thankfully someone turned it in and we got it back. Epcot was our third day on. The second and 4th day we went to Universal Studios. One of my very good friends was also visiting Orlando with her family and so we rendezvoused with them on the days we went there. It was SO FUN!

Surfs up dude
Here are the boys posing with Gru’s crazy car. We got on the minions ride and it was pretty fun
BB (my girlfriend) took this pic of the boys while we went with HER boys on an adult roller coaster that almost killed me.
Out of all the different parks we visited at Universal, Harry Potter world was by far our favorite. It was truly magical and the butterbeer they served was to DIE. FOR. This is the dragon from one of the last movies…So freaking cool
We bought the boys wands and there were places throughout the park where they could practice magic. They loved it

The whole crew! We had so much fun and it was so wonderful to hang out with them
Walking down the main drag with our posse. BB and I served on the schools PTA together. You can see why we would be so close. Hahaha! But what’s also cool is that she has two boys who are 3 years apart as well and my boys adore them. =)
Playing Ding, Dong, Ditch at one of the doors in Harry Potter land. William was killing me here. He thought Voldemort was going to come out so he was ready to cast a spell. Hahahaha

Run!!
The boys with Jacob

On our way to the Hogwarts Express and platform 9-3/4!

This ride soaked us, here’s a look at the kids taking a shower while some other poor fools do the same ride:

BB and Darrick took the boys on the Cat in the Hat ride while we went with their boys on The Hulk. That ride was CRAZY but probably my favorite one there
Striking a pose with the Scooby and Velma
Oh Scooby
In front of the Mystery Machine

Squidword!
And of course Gary
Grandpa and the boys!
BB invited us all over for dinner. Even the pitcher looked at the camera
Turds!
Hanging out at their pool that night. They boys had to be wrenched away.
Our second to last day was spent at LEGOLAND. It couldn’t have been more perfect. We rode on every ride and were  done with the park in about 6 hours. Super fun
All these sculptures were made of legos. It was pretty impressive

William is such a ham

When I took this picture, William asked, “Is this Donald Trump?” Bahahaha!
One of their favorite characters and the star of the new Lego movie, Lloyd. We went and saw it and it was great!
Master Wu

So cool

Getting on one of the roller coasters…
I want this in my house
Getting on the carousel

Doing the firetruck simulation. I almost died of a heart attack
Henry and I  pumping the water and Will trying to put out the “fire”
Grandpa monitoring our progress
The boys went through driving school and somehow got their licenses. Shows how much LEGOLAND knows…

Mini-land – So frickin cool

By far the coolest one

We waited for the launch of the Space Shuttle! Pretty anti-climactic…but I guess I was expecting to fly to the moon?

Grandpa getting whiplash on one of the rides…
Last day on. Went to Animal Kingdom thinking we could somehow get on the Avatar rides, but they were shut down to everyone’s disappointment. I thought there were going to be riots!
So we went on the Animal Safari. It was really fun. Look at this beast.

Warthogs…
The king of the jungle acting pretty chill
White Rhino

The birds
Mommy and baby

Look at that tree!! It’s real!!

Hyena’s

I named this guy Captain Hook. He was missing his foot. Tick Tock Tick Tock
Hippos!
Some intense drum playing going on

Henry was more relaxed
Riding the tram back to the car after the Heavens started dumping all over us the very last day
Anticipating a total rainout, Grandpa bought the entire stock of rain ponchos from Amazon. Hahaha! We only used 5 and gave some away to people at the park. It was hilarious
Oh Henry!
Morning of our departure
Reading comics to us at the airport
William keeping Grandpa entertained

Quick trip to Ft Walton Beach with Tommy!

Tommy had to go on an end of the year trip to FL on business. He had asked me earlier in the year if I wanted to join in him and I of course said YES! I’ve only gone with him on one other work trip and it was to Yuma when Henry was 5 months old and it was an absolute disaster! Ha! So I definitely wanted another chance to redeem the work trip opportunity. I’ve never been to FL – I mean I’ve been there for layovers when I visit Holly but never actually hung out in the state. We had such a fun and RELAXING time. I’m not normally a beach person and even though the water was too cold to swim in, I just loved walking on the shore everyday and collecting sea shells. We also got a major bonus – the hotel that we booked upgraded us for free to a tower suite. So we got a room RIGHT off the shore and we opened our door at night and listened to the ocean. It was heavenly. I’m actually trying to figure out a way for us to go back! Haha! Believe it or not, I just found out that we have good friends that live down there so we might have to hit them up! Here’s looking at you Johnnie! =)

A stop at Arches National Park

On our way home from Joes, we stopped and stayed in Moab for a night. It’s a pretty cool town – it reminds me a lot of Sedona. Not somewhere I’d want to live, but nice to visit. While we were there, we made a trip out to Arches National Park and hiked around for a couple hours. One thing that I will say is that people who visit National Parks on the whole are a bunch of assholes. Not sure what their deal is but I kept a running total of how many people smiled back at me when I smiled at them first and I was able to keep the tally using only 2 hands. It made me realize how lucky we are to live in such a nice state like AZ. I guess I’ve just been spoiled by all the happy people. Hahaha! Anyway, it was a pretty cool place to visit but not sure I’d go back again…

So...this was the coolest part of the park. We were at a place called Devils Garden and out at the very end was the "Dark Angel." We were the only ones out there and believe it or not it was super creepy - a very ominous vibe. Maybe it was the weather but whatever it was, I didn't feel like sticking around too long.
